Arisi Paruppu Saadham is one of my favorite and the easiest dish that can be made in just 30 minutes with ingredients we have in-home. This is a very special food that is popular among Coimbatore people. Arisi paruppu sadam goes well with mango pickle and rice vadagam. Without any other talk lets taste the recipe.
In a bowl, add 2 cups of rice and 1/2 cup toor dal and wash it twice with clean water. Strain the water completely and soak it for 30 minutes. If you want to have the bite of toor dal while eating, avoid soaking it. Instead you can add the toor dal while cooking.
Heat oil in the cooker and add the mustard and cumin seeds. Let them crack and then add in the green chillies, shallots (small onions), garlic, and saute until it turns lite brown. Then add the chopped tomatoes and cook till they turn massy.
Then add turmeric powder, salt (as required), and sambar powder (optional) and mix it together. Next, add the soaked rice and toor dal to the cooker and mix it well. Then add the water and cover the lid. Put in the weight and let it cook until 3 or 4 whistles.

Leave it until the pressure goes out completely, and add 3 tbsp of coconut oil or ghee and serve it hot.
I always prefer adding coconut oil, cause it adds an extra aroma to the rice and it temps our hunger.
